β-cell dysfunction in type 2 diabetes mellitus: the possibilities of modern antihyperglycemic therapy

This review reveals the current understanding of the role of β-cell dysfunction in the onset and development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The pathological processes underlying the impaired insulin secretion in T2DM are described. The data on the influence of mo-dern antihyperglycemic therapy on the functional state of β-cells are presented.
