Mexidol is domestic original drug. The article describes the history of origin of the drug, the modern views on its pharmacokinetics (including data about the penetration of mexidol into mitochondria, as well as its impact on the activity of cytochrome P-450 3A4 isoform and protein-glycoprotein transporter- P) and pharmacodynamics. From the biochemical point of view, advisability of application of mexidol in cerebral hypoxia, oxidative stress, glutamate excitotoxicity is substantiated.
