Current options of gastrointestinal stromal tumors therapy: clinical observation
The possibilities of treatment of localized and generalized forms of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are discussed. Surgical service is the main method of treatment of localized tumors. In Russia, adjunctive treatment is not indicated after radical surgery; patients are under intense case follow-up. Because GIST are not sensitive to conventional chemotherapy, the possibilities of treatment of patients with generalized forms of GIST are mainly related to the introduction into clinical practice of low-molecular tyrosine kinase family inhibitor imatinib (Glivec). According to clinical studies, the Glivec administration as first-line therapy for GIST allows to achieve high levels of patient’s life expectancy without decline of quality of life.
