Probiotics: prospects for therapeutic use in inflammatory intestinal diseases
The paper discusses the prospects for probiotics use for the prevention of exacerbations and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. We present current data on the intestinal microflora and its physiological functions, as well as the role of intestinal flora in the genesis of inflammation in IBD. We give a probiotics characteristics, discuses the results of probiotics clinical trials in IBD. It is concluded that management of IBD by probiotics is a simple, natural and safe therapeutic intervention. These clinical studies suggest that the probiotics use should be long-term - one year continuously, or in the form of repeated courses, required in large doses.
